The pharmacist’s role is to act as a link between healthcare providers. However, patients might not always be forthcoming about the drugs they take. SARMs (selective ergonomic modulators) are becoming more popular because of their performance-enhancing properties such as lean muscle, fat-cutting or endurance.
SARMs are commonly used by people who exercise, bodybuilders, how to take sarms or have to do physically demanding jobs. SARMs had been banned from all sports by the World Anti-Doping Agency in 2008.1 In 2017, the FDA issued a public alert warning fitness enthusiasts, bodybuilders, and those with physically demanding jobs that SARMs could artificially lower the endogenous levels of testosterone, as well as have adverse effects on the liver and cholesterol.
A recent study found that only 52% of 44 products being sold as SARMs actually contained one SARM. Unapproved drugs were also found in 39%. The active compound in 9 percent of the products was not detected, and 25 percent contained substances that weren’t listed on the label. Only 41% of the products had active compounds, and 59% did not have them. These findings indicate a serious lack of regulatory oversight.
Ostarine and Ligandrol (LGD-4033), Testolone and Testolone are the most common SARMs currently available on the marketplace.6 Unfortunately, very few clinical trials to examine their pharmacokinetic profiles as well as identify any potential adverse effects or drug interactions remain unexplored.7 7 Furthermore, SARMs in the fitness industry are used at higher doses and for longer periods of time than what is clinically recommended. SARMs may interact with other substances such as alcohol and drugs.
SARMs sold and purchased as research chemicals are currently legal. SARMs that are marketed as research chemicals are legal to sell and purchase. However, this is often done online.
